AATLANTIS...the very name stirs the imagination, evoking images of ancient grandeur, adventure, romance and mystery. The story of Atlantis dates back to at least 370 BC, to the writings of no less an authority than Plato. His information, in turn, was derived from Egyptian sources even hundreds of years older. In many accounts, Atlantis is said to have been a continent the size of Europe, a true wonder of the ancient world containing magnificent cities, advanced technology and enlightened government. Some historians have speculated that Atlantis was in fact the island of Crete, home to the great Minoan civilization, an advanced early culture of remarkable accomplishment. In other accounts of a more mythological character, Atlantis is claimed to have been the kingdom of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Whether historical or mythical in flavor, all accounts agree that this ancient marvel was utterly destroyed in a spectacular cataclysm, reducing it to rubble and sinking it beneath the ocean waves. It is unlikely that the actual history of Atlantis will ever be known, but in a sense the historical truth is not the most important consideration. For the modern world, Atlantis is firmly established as an enduring and fertile metaphorical reality, a symbol which supremely incarnates the timeless appeal of the sea.
